Owl Steps is a private study app for invited families. We keep as little as we can, we never sell it, and you can delete it at any time. Here is exactly what that means.

What Owl Steps keeps

About each child:

  • A nickname and a picture (an avatar chosen in the app, never a photo).
  • Stars, level, days in a row, the chosen theme and game progress.
  • Which games they finished and how many minutes they played each day.
  • Reward requests, and the recitation checks a parent marks as passed. No voice is recorded.

About the family:

  • The parents' email addresses, used only to send sign-in codes.
  • The family name you chose, your reward list and settings.
  • Your family PIN, stored only in a scrambled form that cannot be read back.
  • The names you give your devices, like "Mimi's iPad".

For safety: a record of sign-ins, devices added or removed, and wrong PIN or code tries. To slow down guessing we use a scrambled form of the internet address, never the address itself.

What we never collect

  • Children's full names, emails, school accounts, photos or location.
  • Contacts, messages or anything outside the app.

There are no ads and no chat between children, and no tracking tools inside the app.

Who can see it

  • Your family: grown-ups in grown-up mode, and each child on their own screens.
  • The person who runs Owl Steps, who can see sign-ins and counts so the app keeps working, but does not read your children's answers.

No other family can see your family's data. Nothing is sold or shared.

Services that help run it

  • Cloudflare hosts the app and its database.
  • Resend delivers the sign-in code emails, so it sees the parent's email address and the code.
  • Google Analytics counts visits to the public home page and this privacy page, so we can see how people find them. It sets cookies and sees pages viewed, device type and rough location. It never runs inside the app where children play, and its advertising features are off.

Cookies and sign-in

Owl Steps uses a sign-in cookie on each device to keep it signed in, for up to 12 months. The app has no advertising or tracking cookies. Sign-in codes work once and expire after 10 minutes. You can remove any device from grown-up mode, and it is signed out at once.

How to delete it

In grown-up mode, open More, then Privacy and delete. You can remove one child or the whole family at any time. We keep a safety copy for 30 days in case of a mistake, then it is gone for good.

You can also email hello@owlsteps.com and we will do it for you.

Children

A parent sets up the family and agrees to this notice before any child plays. Children never type personal details: they tap their own picture to start.

Questions or changes

Email hello@owlsteps.com. If anything on this page changes, we will tell families by email first.
